出遅れました。亡くなったのは１週間前の日曜日です。
サイデンステッカーの名訳として、源氏物語の出だしが比較して挙げられています。Waleyの訳と比べるととても簡潔です。
Waley’s version of the tale’s opening line:
“At the Court of an Emperor (he lived it matters not when) there was among the many gentlewomen of the Wardrobe and Chamber one, who though she was not of very high rank was favored far beyond all the rest.”
Here is Mr. Seidensticker’s, short and sweet:
“In a certain reign there was a lady not of the first rank whom the emperor loved more than any of the others.”
原文は、
いづれの御時にか、女御更衣あまたさぶらひたまひける中に、いとやむごとなき際にはあらぬが、すぐれて時めきたまふありけり。
谷崎、川端、三島などの翻訳があるそう。サイデンステッカーは1921年生まれ、海軍の語学学校で日本語を学び、第２次世界大戦中は語学担当官（という訳語は不適切かもしれませんが。原語はlanguage officerです）として硫黄島にも行ったそうです。

味わい深いとはありがたいお言葉、ありがとうございます。長いほうもそれらしいですね。確かに。源氏物語は大和和紀のマンガでしか読んでませんが、読み返すたび発見があります。
